(AP) — Firefighters aided by calmer winds saw the first signs of successfully beating back a series of deadly and devastating wildfires Thursday, though the fires still burned out of control in and around Los Angeles as the enormity of the devastation started to come into focus with haunting scenes of destruction. Dozens of blocks were flattened to smoldering rubble in scenic Pacific Palisades. Only the outlines of homes and their chimneys remained. In Malibu, blackened palm strands were all that was left above debris where oceanfront homes once stood.
(AP) – Otto Schenk, an actor who became a noted director praised for traditional opera productions and criticized by advocates of contemporary approaches, died Thursday at age 94.
Schenk lived in Austria, and his death was announced by the Vienna State Opera.

Clinton’s own Anthony Moore took the oath of office Tuesday to serve as Speaker Pro Tempore for the 60th Legislature of the Oklahoma House of Representatives. Joining him on the House floor as he was sworn in by Chief Justice Dustin Rowe were his wife, Rachel, and his children, Quinn, Karsten, and Cohen.
