Reader overwhelmed by negativity

DEAR HARRIETTE: It seems like every time I turn around, someone else in my life is going through a crisis. I logged into my computer this morning only to learn that another friend is one step away from being on life support. Another just lost her husband suddenly. And another's son, who was on a full scholarship to college, is flunking out of school. I could go on and on. Normally I am very upbeat, but it's just too much. I don't know how to help the people I love and stay positive. When good things happen, I almost feel guilty for smiling because there's so much bad stuff going on around me. How can I manage it all? – Overwhelmed

Many of us like to buy suet balls or bird food that comes in mesh bags (which help keep the bird seed together when you hang them outside). While for the most part our feathered friends can get a healthy meal or snack from these, there is a chance they can get entangled in the mesh bags. When the suet or bird food gets low, it creates air pockets inside the mesh bag. This can force birds to dig deeper into the bag for food, which can lead to their legs and beaks getting trapped and entangled. It's best to avoid feeding birds from mesh bags and to stick with traditional methods that involve loose feed instead.

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal judge on Thursday rejected Girl Scouts' claims that the Boy Scouts created marketplace confusion and damaged their recruitment efforts by using words like “scouts” and “scouting” in recruitment drives. Manhattan Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ruled that the Boy Scouts of America can describe their activities as “scouting” without referring to gender and that the matter does not need to be put to a jury.
