DEAR HARRIETTE: I found out that I was pregnant about three months ago. This will be my first child, and I'm extremely happy about it. I've told a few immediate family members and my very best friends about my pregnancy, but for some reason, I'm feeling embarrassed about telling anyone outside of that. I'm not sure what exactly I'm feeling embarrassed about. I think it might be the fact that I'm not married or in a relationship with the person I am having a baby with. How do I get over this feeling? — Expecting DEAR EXPECTING: It is understandable that you are feeling a bit uneasy, given that you seem to subscribe to traditional family values that call for a woman to be married before having a child. Since that is not your story now, you have to let go of that narrative.
With billions of face masks going into landfills every year, you might wonder if they're recyclable. The good news is, yes, they are. DEAR HARRIETTE: My girlfriend's parents are getting a divorce after 25 years of marriage, and she's taking it pretty hard. To be completely honest, I didn't really think it would be a big deal for her. She's always told me that her parents seem unhappy and that she would not like to be in a marriage like theirs.
Next month’s 469 midterm congressional elections pit Republican candidates against Democrats in a vital struggle for control of Capitol Hill. But there are other ways than through the prism of party to view the November campaign – and the outcome on Election Day may depend on which of these other narratives prevails: Inflation against abortion.
DEAR HARRIETTE: I am working for a startup that demonstrated a lot of promise a couple of years ago, but things have changed of late. I still have my job, and my boss continues to say that everything is fine and the company isn't going anywhere. But I see a different story. They hired a ton of people earlier in the year and have laid off almost all of them now at year's end. I know some of the people weren't very good at their jobs, but when a small team gets cut in half, that seems like a red flag.
